Magazine Terminology

This is some magazine terminology which i found from some research and thought that it may be useful to refer to throughout both tasks


Advertorial - An advertisement which is disguised as part of the editorial content
Banner - Front page headline which goes across the full width of the page
Body Copy - Main text on the page
Bound - In - A sheet of paper attatched to the magazine e.g. a subscription card
Brand Identity - Distinguishes one magazine or newspaper from another allowing the target audience to recognise it
Bromide - Light sensitive paper used for holding text of images
BSME - British Society of Magazine Editors
Bubble Gum Reading - Easy reading, usually applies for teens and pre- teens
Byline - The name of the journalist who has written the article or feature 
Caption - Written text under an image or drawing 
Coated Paper - Paper coated with a mix of china clay, latex and other materials to give a smooth, glossy finish
Cover Lines - Summaries of the most exciting features and articles which are inside the magazine 
Cover Mount - Gifts stuck to the front cover
Display Advertising - Large adverts, usually covering whole pages
Editiorial - Article expressing the views of an editor 
End Point - Graphic device sometimes used to signify the article has ended
Extent - Number of pages in a publication
Face - Style or design of the magazine type
Fair Use - The ability to freely use material without copyright permission
FH - First half of a magazine
Flightcheck - A software system used to check that pages are complete before publication
Flush Left/Right - When text or a picture is assigned to one side of a page
Folio - A page number
Font or Typeface - Type of character used
Footer - A line of text below the main text, usually a page number
Format - The size, shape, style and appearence of a publication
Gutter - A gap between columns of text of around the text area of a page
Header - Information at the top of a page
Hybrid - A mixture of genres
Indent - Text alligned right of other text
Justified - When a column of text is parallel on both sides 
Keyline - A line or space around an image to seperate it from others
Layout - A page design
Literal - A spelling mistake
Loose Insert - A card/ sheet slipped into the magazine rather than bound in 
Lure - A small section of a story printed on the front page
Masthead - The name of the publication
Mode of Address - The way the magazine speaks to the audience 
Proof Reading - Checking the magazine to make sure that it is accurate 
Pull Quote - A phrase or sentence taken from an article and made larger to attract attention
Sans Tabou - Invasive celebrity photography
Sells or Standfirst - A sentecne after the headline that begins to 'sell' the feature to the reader 
Sidebar - A short article related to the main topic, usually in a seperate box or a different font
